Curated Instruments — Available

From time to time, selected instruments by other makers are prepared, restored, and made available through the workshop.

These instruments are not made in this workshop. They are chosen for their musical, structural, and historical merit, and are offered with full disclosure of authorship. Preparation and setup are carried out to the same standards applied to all work undertaken here.

Selection & Preparation

Curated instruments are typically vintage, second-hand, or by contemporary makers. Each instrument is assessed carefully and selected on its own merits. Not all instruments restored or evaluated in the workshop are offered for sale.

Where required, work may include structural repair, adjustment, or refinement to ensure the instrument performs reliably and musically.

Condition & Disclosure

Each instrument is described factually, with relevant condition notes and details of work undertaken. Prices reflect the instrument itself and the preparation carried out, not authorship.

Further information, images, or documentation can be provided on request.

Valuations & Documentation

Where appropriate, curated instruments may be accompanied by a written valuation prepared in the workshop. Valuations are provided for insurance and documentation purposes and are based on professional opinion, market context, and the instrument’s condition at the time of assessment.

Valuations are independent of sale price and are supplied as supporting documentation only.

Appraisal

This 10-string cittern has an addictive, resonant tone that keeps drawing me back to play it whilst here in the workshop. There’s a warmth and depth to the sustain that is immediately engaging — the Indian rosewood body providing richness and clarity, while the finely carved European spruce soundboard offers exceptional responsiveness and projection.

It is currently set up in G–D–A–D–G tuning, a versatile and resonant configuration that suits Celtic and contemporary folk repertoire beautifully. That said, the instrument lends itself readily to alternative tunings, making it a flexible and expressive companion for exploratory players.
